Trey dedicated Uncle Pen to the death metal band Possessed, calling them "one of the greatest living rock and roll bands" and prompting banter from Fish. Mike teased What I Am before Uncle Pen. Tweezer contained a Woody Woodpecker theme tease from Trey and Possum included teases of Norwegian Wood. La Grange was introduced by Mike as a song by David "The Truth" Grippo.

Review by TheEmu

TheEmu Ah, an early version of Bathtub Gin...think I'll have some wine. ;) Seriously, though, it's amazing how much more tight the band sounds in this performance when compared with the previously reviewed 3/11 and 3/10 1990 shows. Runaway Jim is basic but solid, and the "Possessed" banter is quite amusing before an equally solid Uncle Pen. Trey does get a little loosey-goosey in Divided Sky, but it's still not a bad rendition. It's a cool segue from Lawn Boy into David Bowie, and it's yet another very strong Bowie. I've said it before, but it bears repeating: Bowie is the undisputed heavyweight champ of '85-'91 Phish.

The second set starts out with a solid Mike's Groove...hey, this Cactus guy can play some bass, can't he? The Foam is slow and starts out kind of labored, but they make something of it. There's a standard rendition of Donna Lee, but then, we get treats. The Tweezer is an impressive and interesting version. Then, following MSO, a young Reba makes an appearance. Despite a rough composed section, Trey just mesmerizes in this jam, playing with dreamy effects and jazzy licks and coming to a wonderful, swirling conclusion! Reba grade: C+/B- marked down from B- for the composed slop for those who are interested, and I must say the Reba was a pleasant surprise! From there we get a BIG time Bitch, a breather for Sweet Adeline, and a good, strong Possum closer with lots of Norwegian Wood teases. For the cherry on top, that old Dave "The Truth" Grippo classic, La Grange. This is definitely an enjoyable show that I would place in the 3 3/4 stars range, so I'm going to go ahead and say 4 Stars and let others level it out.

You are going to level it out, right? Listen! Rate! Review! But especially, RATE!!!!

I was able to locate the video footage online for the first set of the Phish show on May 13, 1990 at The Front in Burlington, Vermont. This show is very good I enjoyed the video a lot. I hope you enjoy this footage as much as I did and find it helpful.

thelot Ok SBD source with some flaws. The pitch is a hair sharp and the levels are super hot for the first set. The quality seems to improve a little for the 2nd set. The pitch is corrected and the levels are lowered so the vocals aren’t quite as saturated.

Bathtub Gin cuts in to open the show. After Jim Trey says “as usual we’re gonna dedicate this next song to Possessed, one of the greatest living Rock and Roll bands.” “A lot of Possessed fans out there, huh?” Fish says “Do any of you even know who Possessed is?” “Go buy Seven Churches, either that or Burning in Hell, that’s a song on Seven Churches.” lol Really nice Sky tonight! Lawn Boy provides a nice cool down before an intriguing Bowie closer. Good stuff!

Groove delivers the goods! Nice versions of Foam and Donna Lee follow. Tweezer is magnificent tonight! Reba features some beautiful playing from Trey. Fantastic version! Nice solo from Trey in Bitch. The Possum set closer has some cool Norwegian Wood teasing.
